2 The use of SPSS in Statistical Research

This chapter gives an overview of the purposes for which SPSS can be used. The various phases of the overall research process are used to structure this overview. We start the research process at the stage where the data are collected and proceed to the end when all analyses have been done and the research report can be written. For each phase we explain how SPSS can support the user. We also specify the relevant SPSS commands. References are included to the sections that deal with these commands, making this chapter a useful source, also for research in progress. The research process as discussed in this chapter consists of a preparatory phase followed by six phases oriented at performing statistical analyses. Section 2.1 briefly describes all of these.
